Have you found a pet?

We are happy to give you tips. Becheck below what you can do best.
Which animal species did you find?

Cat
Dog

Cat

Injured/ ill/ in distress/ traffic hazard*

If so, contact our emergency room immediately.

* Traffic hazard means the cat is walking near or on a busy road where there is a high risk of a collision. Many cats are allowed outside, so we cannot and should not pick up all healthy cats just like that. If in doubt, please call.

Basically healthy, but don't trust it

  • Take the cat past a vet for a chip check (free of charge) or contact someone from a Facebook group who has a chip reader;
  • If in doubt, please contact us.

Tips

  • Check if the cat wears a collar with a tube containing the owner's details. Sometimes there is a phone number on the inside of the collar;
  • Register the found cat at Amivedi;
  • Hang posters nearby;
  • Post on Facebook, e.g. at missing/found animals;
  • Place a call in neighbourhood WhatsApp groups and/or the Nextdoorapp;
  • Don't just give food because the cat's chances of returning home are getting slimmer and slimmer;
  • Most cats have an owner, but stray cats also still live in Amsterdam. A cat with an owner is generally socialised and used to people. A stray cat is not, or no longer, and will avoid people rather than approach them. For stray cats, you can contact the Amsterdam Stray Cats.

Deceased

Please contact our control room.

Dog

Running loose

  • Check that the owner is really not around;
  • Contact our emergency room immediately;
  • It is helpful to make yourself small, make no eye contact and let the dog come towards you. Stay calm and speak softly. Try to leash the dog, but be careful that the dog does not bite you;
  • Do not run after the dog and do not call the dog, as this can cause further fear and you thereby increase the chances of the dog running into a road and getting hit. If the dog does not let itself be caught, keep an eye on the dog from a distance;
  • In principle, we do not chase stray dogs. Do always contact our control room by phone. Often the owner has already called us to report the disappearance. We can then pass on the sighting report to the owner so they know where to look;
  • Beware of sharing locations on social media. A well-intentioned manhunt may ensue which will only further agitate the dog. Put this task in the hands of professionals, such as at Dog Search.

Caught

  • Contact our emergency room immediately;
  • Take the dog past a vet or wait for us for a chip check (free of charge). We will collect the dog and, depending on proper registration, return it directly to its owner, temporarily to our premises or to DOA.

Tips

  • Check if the dog wears a badge that has the owner's details on it. Sometimes there is a phone number on the inside of the collar;
  • Be careful with food: maybe the dog is allergic.

Deceased

Please contact our control room.

Other pet

If you have found another pet (alive or deceased), such as a rabbit, ferret or budgie, please also contact us.

  • We ask you to secure the found pet if possible by putting it e.g. in a box and keeping it at home;
  • As soon as we have an ambulance available, we will come and collect the found pet from you and check it for a chip. If the pet is microchipped and the chip is properly registered, we will contact the owner immediately;
  • If the pet is not microchipped, we will register the animal as found on Amivedi and take it to the designated reception location.
